What is speech recognition?

Speech recognition is the process of converting acoustic signals, captured by a microphone or a telephone, to sets of words, through complex algorithms located on a computing device or system.

Speech recognition technology allows a computer to recognize human speech. The systems are speaker independent. They recognize and respond to a wide variety of speakers having different voices, speech patterns, accents and even languages. Speech recognition can recognize anyone's speech, with the condition that they are speaking in the language the application was designed to understand and within the possible phrases for a designed application.

Today automatic speech recognition systems find widespread application in tasks that require a human-machine interface, such as automatic call processing in the telephone network and query-based information systems that provide updated travel information, stock price quotations, weather reports, etc.

There are different types of speech recognition:

  • Discrete speech systems
  • Continuous speech systems
