Phases of speaker recognition

All speaker recognition systems have two phases:

  • Enrollment (or training) phase;
  • Verification (or testing) phase.

In the enrollment phase, the speaker's voice is recorded and usually a number of features are extracted to create a voice print, template, or model.

In the verification phase, a speech sample is compared against a previously formed voice print. For verification systems the speech sample is compared against a single voice print. In order to determine the best match, identification systems compare the utterance against multiple voice prints. Due to the process involved, identification requires more time than verification.
